Shimp succeeds Dan Miller, who was promoted in August 2026 to president of HCA Healthcare’s East Florida Division, according to a report from the San Antonio Express-News. Miller had led Methodist Healthcare as president and CEO since 2023, according to HCA Florida Healthcare.
Shimp is returning to Texas, where he previously served as chief operating officer of St. David's Medical Center in Austin and CEO of Del Sol Medical Center, according to Becker's Hospital Review. During his most recent tenure as CEO in Kissimmee, which began in December 2021, Shimp oversaw growth in clinical services, an expansion of the hospital's cardiovascular program, the opening of four freestanding emergency rooms and management of over $200 million in capital projects, according to a news release cited by the San Antonio Business Journal.
Methodist Healthcare is a joint venture between Nashville-based HCA Healthcare and Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas. The system operates 11 hospitals, 10 freestanding emergency departments and 35 urgent care clinics.
Why it matters: Shimp, a veteran HCA operator, takes leadership of a significant joint venture for the company at a time of expansion. Clinical Terminal data shows Methodist Healthcare System has 1,586 staffed beds and has recently announced plans for a new freestanding emergency room and medical office building, as well as a $45 million hospital expansion. Shimp’s experience managing more than $200 million in capital projects at his prior post aligns with the system's growth strategy. The leadership transition keeps the role within the HCA ecosystem, as Shimp replaces another HCA executive who was promoted within the parent company. According to CMS cost reports for FY2023, the system’s main facility, Methodist Hospital, reported net patient revenue of $2.4 billion and a net operating profit margin of 22.9%. The same facility holds a 3-star overall rating from CMS for 2025.
