# Ballad Health Taps Leon Bass for New Multi-Hospital CMO Role

*[Ballad Health](https://app.clinicalterminal.com/hospital/106802363) has named [Leon Bass](https://app.clinicalterminal.com/person/107523401), MD, as the chief medical officer for three of its community hospitals in Tennessee, creating a new consolidated leadership position.*

According to an Oct. 21 system news release, Bass will oversee [Franklin Woods Community Hospital](https://app.clinicalterminal.com/hospital/826840), [Johnson County Community Hospital](https://app.clinicalterminal.com/hospital/126127) and [Sycamore Shoals Hospital](https://app.clinicalterminal.com/hospital/715181). In the role, he is responsible for physician leadership, oversight of clinical operations, quality, patient outcomes and operational efficiency, *Becker's Hospital Review* reported.

Bass has held multiple leadership positions within the health system. He most recently served as chief of staff at one of Ballad Health's medical centers, a role he was elected to in July 2025, according to the *Johnson City Press*. He has also been the medical director for sleep disorders at that same medical center since 2020, a role he also holds at Sycamore Shoals Hospital, per *Becker's*. His past roles include serving as the medical ICU director at a level 1 trauma center, the *Johnson City Press* reported.

“I began my career in medicine to help people, and in this new role, I'm excited to extend my reach by supporting our clinicians and helping ensure our patients receive timely, efficient, high-quality care,” Bass stated in the news release.

The president of Ballad Health's Southern Region said in the release that Bass’s “dedication to his practice and this region made him the right choice for this role.”

Bass has been practicing in the region since 2012 as a physician specializing in pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine, according to the *Johnson City Press*. He earned his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine and is board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases, critical care medicine and sleep medicine, according to his provider profile on Ballad Health's website.

**Why it matters:** The Tennessee-based system, which has 1,246 staffed beds across 50 member facilities, recently completed an $8 million expansion of its Clinical Command Center in August 2026. A press release about the expansion stated it was intended to accelerate care across the Appalachian Highlands. The hospitals he will oversee include the 80-bed Franklin Woods Community Hospital and the 109-bed Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
