Abridge Expands AI Documentation to Inpatient, Pilots Outpatient Orders With Epic

Abridge announced on June 18, 2025 that it is extending its generative AI clinical documentation platform to inpatient care and beginning an initial rollout of outpatient orders functionality. The inpatient offering, Abridge Inside for Inpatient, integrates with Epic's Haiku and Hyperspace, letting clinicians generate notes without leaving the Epic workflow, according to the company.

The inpatient product supports history and physical, progress, and consult note types, with Epic mapping generated notes into the selected type. Abridge said it is also working on an update to the progress note that would incorporate prior note data from Epic. The outpatient orders pilot, run through Epic's Workshop program with select design partners, surfaces medications discussed during encounters inside Epic so clinicians can place orders from the conversation; support for imaging, labs, and other order types is planned.

Sutter Health's Dr. Veena Jones, vice president and chief medical information officer, said the technology transforms bedside conversations into structured Epic notes, and Sutter hospitalist Dr. Richard Liu described capturing patient information by phone. Coastal Carolina family medicine physician Dr. Mary Kirby said medications discussed during visits appear in Epic. Abridge CEO and co-founder Dr. Shiv Rao said the offerings were developed with Epic through the Workshop program.
