HSS Deploys Abridge AI Platform Enterprise-Wide for Orthopedic Documentation
Hospital for Special Surgery has selected Abridge's AI documentation platform for enterprise-wide deployment, the vendor announced July 24, 2025. The New York-based orthopedic health system, which performs more than 40,000 surgeries annually, will use the technology to support documentation for approximately 200,000 patients per year.

According to Abridge, the platform automatically detects care setting, specialty, and language to generate clinical documentation in real time, supporting 55+ specialties and 28 languages across outpatient, inpatient, and emergency department settings. Upcoming orthopedic-specific enhancements are intended to capture details on imaging, laterality, risks, and treatment options.
Dr. Ashis Barad, Chief Digital and Technology Officer at HSS, said the collaboration aims to elevate clinical note quality and care outcomes, describing ambient scribing as "just the beginning." Answorth Allen, MD, Associate Surgeon-in-Chief and sports medicine surgeon at HSS, said ambient AI is capturing clinical conversations in real time to free clinicians from screens and paperwork.
Dr. Shiv Rao, CEO and Co-Founder of Abridge, said the company is pursuing specialty- and setting-specific documentation, calling specialty-focused institutions like HSS catalysts for scalable innovation.
