WashU Medicine, BJC Health Expand Abridge to 4,000 Clinicians
WashU Medicine and BJC Health have expanded ambient AI documentation platform Abridge across BJC Health's East Region, making it available to approximately 4,000 clinicians. The expansion follows a pilot program involving 450 clinicians in 2025 and was driven by clinician demand and evaluation results, according to an Abridge announcement dated September 2, 2026.
Philip Payne, PhD, Chief Health AI Officer for BJC Health and WashU Medicine, said the evaluation found Abridge significantly reduced documentation time, particularly after-hours work, and improved physician and patient experience. Clinicians in outpatient settings including family medicine, internal medicine, OB/GYN, pediatrics, and orthopedic surgery showed strong adoption.
Encounter-level data from the pilot showed documentation time reductions improved from 8% initially to 15% by day 150, and after-hours documentation reductions improved from 6% to 20% by day 150. Abridge CEO Shiv Rao, MD, said the research demonstrates that the more clinicians use the platform, the more time they save.
