Virginia Report: Federal Medicaid Cuts Put 13 Hospitals at Risk of Closure

A June 2026 report from Virginia’s Joint Commission on Health Care warned that up to 13 hospitals in the commonwealth are at risk of closure. The risk is attributed to federal Medicaid cuts from H.R. 1, a bill signed into law in 2025, with major financial changes scheduled to take effect in 2027.

The report identified five hospitals as being at immediate risk of closure: Bon Secours Southampton Memorial Hospital, Carilion Giles Community Hospital, Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital, Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital, and VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital. An additional eight hospitals were also identified as being at risk.

According to Blue Virginia, KFF estimated the legislation could cause 260,000 Virginians to lose health insurance. The Joint Commission on Health Care report predicted that before closures, communities could see hospitals cut services like chemotherapy, dialysis, and maternity care.
