Karmanos Cancer Institute Reports Record Patient Growth, Citing Expansion and Research Investment

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, part of McLaren Health Care, announced on June 22, 2026, that it treated a record 15,754 new cancer cases in fiscal year 2025. According to the institute, this marks a more than 47% increase from the 10,670 new cases treated in 2020.

The growth is attributed to a multi-year strategy that includes expanding access across Michigan. Since 2020, Karmanos has added nearly 128,000 square feet of clinical space across its 17-location network. Projects included a $48 million expansion of its Farmington Hills facility, completed in 2022, and new outpatient centers in Dearborn and Roseville.

Investment in research and technology was also cited as a driver of growth. The institute directs more than $60 million annually to cancer research and, between 2020 and October 2025, opened 609 clinical trials, enrolling over 2,700 patients. The organization also highlighted its adoption of therapies such as theranostics and Lifileucel for metastatic melanoma.

To support the expansion, Karmanos stated it has recruited 43 scientists and clinicians since 2020. The institute also noted that it has received a five-star rating from CMS for nurse communication, a distinction achieved by 13 hospitals in Michigan.
