SSM Health President DeAnn Thurmer Receives 2026 Rural Health Ambassador Award

The Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative (RWHC) has named DeAnn Thurmer a recipient of its 2026 Rural Health Ambassador Award. Thurmer is the president of three SSM Health hospitals: St. Clare Hospital — Baraboo, Ripon Community Hospital, and Waupun Memorial Hospital. The award recognizes healthcare professionals for significant contributions to rural health and community engagement.

According to the June 12 announcement, Thurmer was selected for a lifelong commitment to rural healthcare. Her career spans more than four decades, beginning as a registered nurse at Waupun Memorial Hospital before she advanced through progressive leadership roles. The RWHC cited her clinical perspective in an executive role and her focus on supporting caregivers.

In addition to her leadership within SSM Health, Thurmer is involved in community outreach and advocacy. She serves on the RWHC board of directors, participates in the cooperative's president roundtables, and has been involved in strategic planning efforts at SSM Health St. Clare Hospital — Baraboo.
